If you’ve spent any time on dog-lover corners of the internet, you already know the Shiba Inu: the curled tail, the fox-like face, the near-permanent “Shiba Smile,” and a personality that’s equal parts loyal and stubbornly independent. Shiba Inus have become one of the most-loved dog breeds outside Japan too — from meme culture to plush toys to a devoted global fan base. Now there’s a book made entirely by the people who know them best: their owners.

ToggleWhat the Book Is

Shiba Inu (Vol. 1), published by Reiwa Publishing on November 11, 2025, is the first volume in a “Dog Breed Photo Book” series. Every photo inside was submitted, free of charge, by Shiba Inu and Mame Shiba (mini Shiba) owners from across Japan — no professional photographer, no staged studio shoots. Just real dogs, in their everyday moments.
Inside, you’ll find the three expressions Shiba fans live for: the joyful “Shiba Smile,” the slightly comical “worried face” that makes them look almost human, and the irresistible sight of a Shiba curled into a perfect sleeping donut. It’s 45 pages of unfiltered Shiba charm — candid walks, funny faces, and quiet naps.

Why It’s Different: A Book Built by Its Own Fans
What makes this project stand out is that it’s fully participatory. Reiwa Publishing runs an open call inviting Shiba Inu owners nationwide to submit their dog’s photo for free, and the selected shots become part of the published book — complete with a short write-up about each dog. That means every page carries a bit of real affection from an actual owner, rather than polished stock photography.

The project is ongoing, too — Reiwa Publishing is already collecting photos for future volumes (Shiba Inu and other breeds), with an award program that recognizes the most-loved dogs through reader voting via QR code.
