When you hear the term “sumi-e,” what scenes come to mind?
Perhaps the image of someone sitting upright in a quiet Japanese-style room, brush in hand.
Or maybe the folding screens adorning temples in old Japan.
Let’s explore the art of sumi-e together.

What is Sumi-e?

Sumi-e is read as “sumi-e.” Literally, it means a painting created using ink.

Its defining characteristics are the gradations of a single ink color, the energy and texture of the brushstrokes, the subtle smudges, and the use of white space on the paper. All these elements combine to create a world of sumi-e where depth and expressiveness rival even the most colorful paintings.

The essential tools for creating sumi-e are primarily the “Four Treasures of the Study”: brush, ink, inkstone, and paper. Today, more accessible tools like brush pens and ready-to-use liquid ink are also widely available.

What’s the Difference Between Sumi-e and Suiboku-ga?

When researching sumi-e, you’ll also encounter the term “suiboku-ga.” Suiboku-ga is famously associated with the Zen monk and painter Sesshu, who flourished during the Muromachi period.

In modern usage, sumi-e and sumi-ga-ga are often used almost interchangeably.

While sumi-ga-ga involves using gradations of ink density and varying water content to create expression, the term sumi-e carries a broader, more free-spirited nuance.
Recently, many contemporary artists working with ink choose to use the term “sumi-e” for their practice.

Gaining Popularity Worldwide! SUMI-E Spreading Worldwide

Today, sumie attracts significant interest not only within Japan but globally. Overseas, it is often called “SUMI-E,” preserving the Japanese sound, or known as “Ink Wash Painting” to describe the technique. Sumie is frequently introduced alongside the spirit of Zen, and an increasing number of people are learning sumie as a meditative practice to calm the mind.

Representative Contemporary Sumi-e Artists

The world of sumi-e is vast, with many artists, including young contemporary creators, continually expanding the possibilities of ink.

Some artists inherit traditional landscape painting techniques, while others, known as “sumi-e artists,” actively create ink paintings featuring anime and game characters.
For example, contemporary sumi-e artists who depict athletes and warriors with dynamic brushstrokes are showcasing the power of creating works live before audiences through live painting performances.

For Those Who Want to Try Drawing Themselves: Classes and Workshops You Can Experience in Japan

Recently, more studios, especially in urban areas, are offering one-time workshops. Even if you feel “getting all the tools is still a bit daunting,” it’s okay.
Many introductory sessions lend you all the necessary tools like brushes and ink, so you can participate empty-handed.

Learning sumi-e also offers a “quiet time” to reflect on yourself. Step away from your smartphone or computer, grind the ink, and place your brush on white paper.

Why not try knocking on the door of a workshop or class near you?

Sumi-e is an art form whose depth and infinite possibilities grow the more you learn about it. The landscapes once seen by Sesshu, the dynamic expressions of modern artists, and even your very first stroke—all are born from the same material: ink.
Learn tradition while enjoying your own unique expression, and preserve it in tangible form.

We are truly excited to see how your world expands through sumi-e.
